December 13, 2003 -- THE Times got another big-time snub from President Bush yesterday - just a few hours after its Washington Bureau Chief, Philip Taubman, boasted on C-SPAN that more than 100 copies of the "well-read" newspaper are delivered daily to the White House.
"I don't read those editorials," Bush told a reporter who asked a question specifically about a Times editorial that ran yesterday. "Maybe you ought to ask the question not in that context but in another context."
At the end of the session, Bush said more diplomatically, "I didn't mean to diss the New York Times editorial page, but I just didn't - I'm not reading it a lot these days."
He quickly added: "Or anybody else's for that matter."

This leak," Daniel Ellsberg replied, "is more timely and potentially more important than the Pentagon Papers." The exposure of the memo, he said, had the potential to block the invasion of Iraq before it began: "Truth-telling like this can stop a war."
Katharine Gun's truth-telling did not stop the war on Iraq, but it did make a difference. Some analysts cite the uproar from the leaked memo as a key factor in the U.S.-British failure to get Security Council approval of a pro-war resolution before the invasion began in late March.

A forceful proponent of the war, Sen. Joe Lieberman, said Dean is in a "spider hole of denial,'" a reference to Saddam's ignominious hideout and Dean's assessment of the capture's impact.

President Bush scored a major political victory with the capture of Saddam Hussein, but it won't give him a break from Democratic rivals who continue to argue that he mishandled the war in Iraq.

The Damfacrats don't like you. With all respect, that is completely full of crap and you have no chance.
You said "hallelujah and praise the lord" and then you demanded the execution of Saddam. You called for death several times. It's understandable that you feel that way but it's unseemly and barbaric to talk about it.
The idea that you are the tough guy among candidates is laughable.
The insurance companies are all in Connecticut. The corporations are all in Delaware. Is that why Meet the Press likes you and Joe Byden so much?
You are proof that a politician's personality, over issues, is what gets votes. Yours is almost bad enough to make President Bush look electable.

CONTINUING THE JERRY G INFLUENCE
Bill Schnieder (sp?) on CNN Headline News gave his little report and it almost looked like CNN was going to admit to all the assistance the US gave to Saddam over the years.
In the end, he excused/ignored everybody for everything and praised the Bush administration for recognizing that "the lesser of two evils is still evil." Now, where have we heard this one before?

MORE PEACE OR CUE FOR CIVIL WAR?
Damfacrats are still gethering thoughts and ideas on the capture. It must be a good thing, at least in the immediate sense, unless it reassures the power-grabbers, who might step up to civil war. It's great for troop morale and they deserve lots of credit, unlike the PT, who did nothing, as usual.
Its no surprise Saddam is non-cooperative, despite the media's attempt to act as if there was a chance he would tell us anything helpful. Look for Dem candidates' statements to be compared with Saddam's for "traitorous" similarities.
UPDATE: Now the word is that he is talking and cooperative. Hmmmm...one never knows what to believe.

WESLEY CLARK IS A SERIOUS MAN
Can anyone even conceive of Bush doing this?
Of course, Karl Rove can't bypass the chance for some prior restraint:
Can anyone even conceive of Bush doing this?
Mr. Milosevic, whose trial began in February 2002, is facing 66 charges, including genocide, stemming from his role in those wars, which left more than 200,000 people dead, destroyed villages and towns, and drove more than a million people from their homes. General Clark will be a witness for the prosecution. ...
General Clark faces direct cross-examination by Mr. Milosevic, who conducts his own defense and usually demands as much time to question a witness as the prosecution. Frequently, he is given more time.
the Bush administration has demanded the right to edit videotapes and transcripts of the sessions before they are made public. ...
Closed sessions are routinely held at the United Nations tribunal that deals with Balkan war crimes, but usually to protect witnesses's safety. The conditions of General Clark's appearance are new. ...
Among the 280 witnesses who have already testified at the trial, there have been many high-profile witnesses and many senior military officers from other nations. Only France is known to have insisted that its top military officers testify behind closed doors.

So says Robert Huggins Associates, a think tank based in the United Kingdom that ranked 125 regions for its 2003-04 World Knowledge Competitiveness Index.
The report defines a knowledge economy as "the capacity and capability to create and innovate new ideas, thoughts, processes and products, and to translate these into economic value and wealth."
Rochester beat out better-known regions such as Seattle; Raleigh-Durham, N.C.; Tokyo; London; Hong Kong; and Ontario, Canada. ...
... The Huggins index ranked Rochester first in the world for patents per capita, first in instrumentation and electrical engineering employment per 1,000 inhabitants, fourth in expenditures on primary and secondary education, 15th in labor productivity and 18th in gross domestic product per capita.

US Secretary of State Colin Powell has named James Brown, the so-called "Godfather of Soul," to a new and unusual, but apparently fictitious, senior diplomatic position, the State Department said.
Spokesman Richard Boucher confirmed Monday that Powell had indeed appointed Brown to be the first US "secretary of soul and foreign minister of funk" but said the job description for the post had not yet been drawn up.

A European company discovered a way to make solar cells that will generate electricity twenty times cheaper than today's solar panels.
Over a typical 20-year life span of a solar cell, a single produced watt should cost as little as $0.20, compared with the current $4.
The new solar cells would even be able to compete with electricity generated by burning fossil fuels such as oil and gas, which costs about $0.40 per watt, said Salvo Coffa, who heads ST's research group that is developing the technology.
"This would revolutionize the field of solar energy generation," he said.

"What I did hear was, that Dean and Gore told the cabbie to 'take us to Harvard,' and he dropped them off in Harlem instead," Rangel said.
Clark refused to be drawn into discussions about Dean and his lead over the eight other candidates, preferring to stick to "what's wrong with George Bush and his policies."
He accused the president of supporting a policy of "perpetual war," and proclaimed himself "the person to face down the commander in chief."
Rangel agreed, saying: "In times of war, we need a warrior."

TOM RIDGE: UNLIKELY HERO OR BAIT BLUFF?
The Homeland Panic Button is suggesting that illegal aliens may need to be granted legal status. If this is sincere, he may have just lit the fire under that far-right (Newt Gingrich not Patty-Patty Buch-Buch) candidate who can draw votes from the PT.
Savage says that 250,000 people went to his website poll and warned against such a policy.
Then again, it could be a bluff, just to keep the fires of xenophobia fully stoked. The administration likes to appease the wingnuts by proposing policies it knows won't fly. This is kind of a reverse version of that, to let them know they "still count" when their outrage has an "influence."
As far as race-baiting goes, Damfacrats have noticed that it has been peaking lately. Last night, Faux had one of its short news breaks before Oh Really at 11, featuring only three stories:
1. 12-year-old black kid who killed 6-year-old gets new trial from another "whacko" judge.
2. Two African-American men kill a clerk during a convenience store robbery.
3. Bobby Brown hits Whitney Houston.

I like Dean as much as anyone, the war sucks, the economy sucks, but the question is, as Raven has been alluding to, are the rest of the people in this country on board with Dean and this way of thinking?
Sad to say, I'm not sure, you have a lot of people out there like my boss, who wave the "W" flag no matter what.
For example: "U.S. soldiers killed in attack today." Response by people like this: "Oh well, we just need to bomb the shit out of those sand n-----s even harder."
Sad to say, this is reality.

The defense officials said they had no reason to believe the problems were anything other than "stupid mistakes" by Halliburton.

From the N.Y. Daily News:
Senior Bush political managers have been ordered to curb their cockiness but many of them privately say President Bush has drawn the opponent of his dreams in Dean - a left-leaning Democrat they contend can be tarred as a latter-day George McGovern.
"The best thing Bush has going for him is that Dean is a weak Michael Dukakis," a key Bush official told the Daily News. "Dukakis won 10 states. Unless things turn very bad for Bush, I don't see Dean winning more than five." ***
A second prominent campaign adviser echoed: "We are extraordinarily happy today."***
As early as last August, Bush political aides were silently cheering on Dean's candidacy from the sidelines.
"We can't say this publicly," one aide said then, "but we love that Dean's coming on. Never in a million years did we think there was a chance we'd get Dean."

TPM SAYS GORE ENDORSEMENT HELPS CLARK
This makes sense, relative to the other candidates.
We know it is bad form to criticize the heroic bloggers like Josh Marshall but his middling views on the primaries are becoming tiresome.
In this post, he goes so far as to suggest that Lieberman probably doesn't have a chance, yet includes him among the top five. That's not exactly walking out onto the prediction limb.
To be fair, Josh states firmly that Edwards is out, which is reassuring, especially coming from a "could be, who knows" election writer.
So it's a two-man race Josh? Dean and Clark? Big newsflash to Damfacrats.

Clark: 15%
The Press Poll (If Hillary were running):
Dean: 13%
Clark: 10%

Gore/Dean support shocking and may be the end of all good hope (Clark), but it certainly has to do w/ the polls at this point in time. Who knows, maybe folks'll get smart and nip it in the bud! Gore/Tipper kinda sucks...no surprise these sub-level crats might ensure the Pubs' re-election.
I saw Hillary on Meet The Press last night and she was thoroughly impressive...(Gingrich was the R opposition, and looked like a stale TURKEY) ...she will be the one in 2008...the current poll (approx):
Dean: 18%
Gephardt: 15%
Clark: 15%
The Press Poll (If Hillary were running):
Dean: 13%
Clark: 10%
Gephardt: 10%
Hillary: 55%+..........?

Some people might even think that Al Gore claimed to have invented Howard Dean, thanks to Republican media gremlins. This could create a disinclination to follow Al Gore's lead.

PETROLICANS ARE TERRIFIED OF WESLEY CLARK
If Wesley Clark loses the nomination, at least he won't have to dodge a conspiracy bullet. He's already been shot fours times, of course. Dean probably drank four shots in a row, at one time or another.

WESLEY CLARK INTERVIEWED BY CHRIS MATTHEWS
Why does Chris Matthews dislike Wesley Clark so much? Maybe it's because Wesley Clark is willing to say that William Jefferson Clinton was one of the greatest Presidents ever. Chris Matthews dislikes William Jefferson Clinton and Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton very much.
Maybe it's because Wesley Clark is one of the few people who Chris Matthews thinks is smarter than Chris Matthews. About that, Chris Matthews would be correct. Not so much, the "few" part.

BULK BLOGGING
Blogger was down all afternoon, so we shall submit all our posts under this umbrella.
On This Week, George had Hillary Clinton on and read back some negative comments she made about the Plastic Turkey, particularly the idea that he is a radical. With all of George's experience in journalism, his brilliant question to the Senator was "Did you really say this?" Hillary's message is usually pitch-perfect for the masses, as is his her acquired upstate NY accent, which Damfacrats do not at all resent. Admission: she voted for the war and the Patriot Act.
Bush is All Hat and No "Cattle" (hear New Damfaudio below) and Wes Clark says he's "all bully and no pulpit." Nice.
The significance of this NY Times Article must not be overlooked. As we have said before, the US is learning why, all morals aside, Saddam was ruthless because it was the only way he could keep the so-called nation intact. Check out some quotes from US military leaders: Looking good, America.
Take Back the Media radio busted out some good slams this week, including the suggestion that Laura (the First Turkey) was home "basting cheetos" while the PT took his jerk-jaunt with Condi as mistress. On the other hand, while Don and Michael resist endorsing any candidate, they had some kind words about the General and discussed his heroics in the military: "that's a man," and "smartest one" with his "perfect retort" to the RNC fear ad.
The fastidious Nitpicker posted a link to this GOP TV horror show. Check it out and count the minority groups featured, if you can hold down your cookies. Also, this new video on "angry Democrats," from Oliver Willis.
Here's a great "tough love" article from the Democratic Underground. The writer promotes a lot of the Damfacratic ideals but is unwilling to accept the Damfadoctrine of negativizing Howard Dean before he wins the nomination. (By the way, the rumor mill and an insider who had lunch with TPM says flatly: "It's Dean." Something about the realism of the circumstances made the Damfacratic heart skip a beat). Anyway, here are some of the words of wisdom from the DU article, with which we are sure Raven would concur:WAY AHEAD: The Europeans are going on the high-tech warpath against an underexamined Damfacratic thorn-in-the-side, noise pollution.
A BETTER WAY: Cincinnati Mayor excuse-maker could not come up with an argument to refute the notion that there must be a better way than 40 whacks to subdue an unruly suspect. So he did not try and, to his credit, is pushing for tasers.
TWO SCOOPS: New Damfacrat 3mo sent us a link to the Cornell conservative pamphlet. She should let us know when they show their inexperience and publish a picture of someone in blackface. It always happens.
BOO HOO: Wild Bill Janklow cried on the witness stand during testimony. Maybe he used the ole Joey Tribiani acting method - tweezers and a hole in your front pocket.

You have to understand the Arab mind," Capt. Todd Brown, a company commander with the Fourth Infantry Division, said as he stood outside the gates of Abu Hishma. "The only thing they understand is force - force, pride and saving face."
"With a heavy dose of fear and violence, and a lot of money for projects, I think we can convince these people that we are here to help them," Colonel Sassaman said.

Anyway, here are some of the words of wisdom from the DU article, with which we are sure Raven would concur:
As noted earlier, the Democrats' brain-trust is heavily populated with lawyers and professors, while the GOP draws its talent from the marketplace - from commerce and advertising. Thus the Democrats are inclined to approach the electorate as if they were in a courtroom or a seminar room. The Republicans treat the voter as if s/he were walking on to a used car lot. The result? The Democrats win the arguments, and the Republicans win the elections.
The Democrats have a rich assortment of issues, and that very variety could prove to be counter-productive. So they must pick the hottest items, simplify the message, and repeat and repeat and repeat. About the time that the candidates get sick and tired of repeating "the same-old-same-old," is the time the public may begin to "get it."
A BETTER WAY: Cincinnati Mayor excuse-maker could not come up with an argument to refute the notion that there must be a better way than 40 whacks to subdue an unruly suspect. So he did not try and, to his credit, is pushing for tasers.

NATHANIEL JONES AS LITMUS TEST
(UPDATE: Greetings, Cincinnati blog visitors. Please visit links at end of article for more "facts and context" Thank you.)
Here is an involved article about the split reaction in Cincinnati. It raises some fair points:
The reporter tends to reference the weakest and most inflammatory arguments made by those outraged at the beating. He also raises the fact that the video shows Jones saying "white boy, redneck" to the officer. The knee jerk apologists point treat this as smug irony, although there is no law against insulting cops.
This author estimates that between 800-1000 people die in police custody every year and he is not too happy about it. The beating and death of a slur-spewing white man at the hands of black officers would be no less appalling, however, it would not carry the same historical and local baggage.
Here's something that Court TV's crime library had to say about lynching in America:In 1906, for the one and only time in its history, the Supreme Court held a criminal trial, when a man was lynched after the court had stayed his execution. The Court convicted the Sheriff of contempt for allowing the lynching, the first time any law enforcement officer had been held accountable in any way. The conservative estimates indicate that some 3000 people were lynched between 1900 and 1930. Only 88? These facts should simply remind the doubters that racism did not disappear some time in the 1980's just because it went out of fashion.
Cincinnati blog deserves credit for following the story closely although Damfacrats do not see it the same way. More like Radio Free Newport.
Certainly, Cinicinnati blog should have something more negative to say about the sickening Sean Hannity and Bill Bunningham exchange on Tuesday but we are grateful for helping us find the transcript: In the end, Damfacrats are mostly upset about the brutality, more than the racial factor, but it doesn't help to have white people jumping up and down to forgive the beating the moment they see the video. Some folks out there, maybe even someone you thought you knew, enjoyed watching it - and those folks aren't African-American.

(UPDATE: Greetings, Cincinnati blog visitors. Please visit links at end of article for more "facts and context" Thank you.)
Here is an involved article about the split reaction in Cincinnati. It raises some fair points:
To the Coalition for a Just Cincinnati, a black activist group that Friday sent letters to President Bush and all of the Democratic presidential candidates urging a federal investigation, Jones was "mercilessly beaten to death" by Cincinnati police officers in a "modern day lynching."
Contrast that with the opinion of one white caller to a local radio talk show, who remarked: "I won't say he got what he deserved. But I'll say he got what he started."
This author estimates that between 800-1000 people die in police custody every year and he is not too happy about it. The beating and death of a slur-spewing white man at the hands of black officers would be no less appalling, however, it would not carry the same historical and local baggage.
Here's something that Court TV's crime library had to say about lynching in America:
The Civil War left a trail of blood and bitterness that twisted its way through successive generations and set the stage for a frenzy of so called mob justice that killed thousands of men, women and children, most of them black. And between the years 1880 and 1905, a period of twenty five years, not one person was ever convicted of any crime associated with these killings. Lynchings are, in effect, the most extensive series of unsolved murders in American history.
Undoubtedly, the real numbers were much higher for lynchings were often unreported by local authorities. *** By 1932, lynchings had decreased to a new low of ten incidents and during the entire decade only 88 blacks were lynched.
Cincinnati blog deserves credit for following the story closely although Damfacrats do not see it the same way. More like Radio Free Newport.
Certainly, Cinicinnati blog should have something more negative to say about the sickening Sean Hannity and Bill Bunningham exchange on Tuesday but we are grateful for helping us find the transcript:
CUNNINGHAM: Alan, from the get-go Nathaniel Jones was completely in charge of what happened to him. Nathaniel Jones was responsible for weighing 200 pounds overweight.
LAWSON (Jones family lawyer): No.
CUNNINGHAM: Too many purchase Big Boys, too many Krispy Kreme doughnuts, too many Sliders from White Castle.***
HANNITY: Mr. Lawson, this is about money now, isn't it? This has become -- You're going to sue the city for millions, aren't you?
CUNNINGHAM: He's a multimillionaire.
LAWSON: Can they give me his life back?
CUNNINGHAM: He's a multimillionaire because of this.
LAWSON: Well, you're damn right I'm going to sue them for money. Can they give him his life back? Can they give him his life back?
CUNNINGHAM: If we keep incentivizing them, you're going to be a millionaire.
LAWSON: Can they give him his life back?
COLMES: We've got to go.
CUNNINGHAM: No I'm sorry he's dead, but you're a billionaire.

DOG IN A MANGER
New Damfaudio - "Dog in a Manger" -2.5 MB wav - 1:19 sec.
The Plastic Turkey made a surprise visit to Washington and presided over the traditional lighting of the national Christmas tree. After an hour of music, he took the podium and analogized himself to both Santa Claus and Jesus Christ. "The King" was born among "cattle," much like the humble beginnings of any good Texan.
This so-called Pageant of Peace is yet another effort by the polypropylene administration to jealously guard values that it does nothing to promote, like a dog in a manger that refuses to let livestock feed but wants nothing of the food for itself.

JONES TIMELINE
A close analysis of the video reveals the following facts in regard to time:
The video tape has a 97-second gap that precedes the first images, which are of Jones lunging at the cop. The police claim that this is because the camera only runs when the blue lights are flashing. Skeptics wonder if they erased that part because it shows provocation by the police. It certainly seems implausible that the cop would have gone over to the car and turned the lights back on at the exact instant before Jones ran at him.
Jones struggled with the two police for thirty seconds before being wrestled to the ground.
Jones was then struck with the baton 15 times before managing to briefly grab hold of it. He is hit at least 18 more times, for a total of 33 blows in 40 seconds. From the time he swung at the cop to the time he was fully subdued was 1:30. The cops are constantly ordering him to put his hands behind his back, which, apparently, was no easy feat. Near the end, Jones seems to cry out for his "Mama."
At 1:30, two more police had arrived and they held Jones down, fully controlling him, and attempted to place the cuffs on him. Someone warns, "Pepper."
At 2:00, six cops were present, and they managed to get one cuff on him. Jones begins to say "ow" a lot.
At 3:00, they applied the second cuff to a motionless and silent Jones.
For thirty seconds they stand around and collect themselves.
They roll Jones over, check his pulse and begin to panic, yelling for the "Fire" medics and then becoming outraged that the medics had left. They try several proven means of CPR, from poking Jones and saying "sir" over and over, to shaking his shoulder and checking for his wallet. Someone asks if the camera is rolling.
At 5:55, the medics arrive and immediately begin CPR. Too late.
Damfacrats were unable to discern when the cuffs were removed, if at all. Two cops returned to the camera issue and determined that it was indeed left running, although one believed he turned of the mic.
Today, the local police union president had this to say: The homicide unit is investigating. The cops will probably be back to work by Monday.
Rupert Murdoch's New York Joke, which is kept afloat for propaganda purposes despite tens of millions lost every year, published an article entitled "By the Book," which included this comment from Police Chief Streicher (now there's an appropriate name): "I think there's enough on the tape to have a preliminary judgment about what occurred."
Damfacrats think so too, which is why we are not sitting around waiting for "all the facts," because the incident was clearly a total outrage. Res Ipsa Loquitur.
Finally, if you think Damfacrats are biased on this story, you should check out this article from Kenya about the beating, which is shamelessly unconfirmed and critical:

That is when the officer is at his most dangerous. He would wade through a pile of corpses to emerge alive at the end of the encounter. Professional officers exercise prudence in determining the amount of force necessary to maintain law and order, and then they act swiftly.
Occasionally, officers succumb to the temptation to manhandle a suspect just to show who is the boss. It is that needless extra whack that defines the line between necessity and a malicious intention to harm.

Raven drops off this report from Media Daily News on PR firms' exploration of blogs as an outlet for marketing:
nearly 74 percent of respondents said they'd be amenable to receiving information from PR pros, with a caveat: nearly half say they would post a negative review if they don't like the product or service being pushed.
A mere 13.4 percent of respondents run ads in their blogs, while 50.6 percent are not open to doing so. Of those who don't carry ads, 43.5 percent said they simply "don't want to." However, 15.7 percent of respondents noted that they "want to, but... do not know how" - trumping the number of bloggers who believe that blogs and advertising don't mix (15 percent).
WOMAN PULLS A JANKLOW OVER BURGER
Will Bill Janklow serve time for refusing a hot dog? This woman got ten years after refusing a burger:
From the Associated Dean.
Will Bill Janklow serve time for refusing a hot dog? This woman got ten years after refusing a burger:
After ordering at the drive-thru April 23, Nolan became angry when she was told the restaurant's cheeseburgers didn't come with mayonnaise. Witnesses said she threw the burger back through the drive-thru window.
The manager offered her another burger but Nolan then complained about her french fries and drink.
When she couldn't pacify her customer, the manager called police and was told to take down the woman's license plate number. When she went outside, Nolan hit her with her car.
Nolan testified she was startled by a car horn, accelerated and accidentally hit Jenkins.

NEVER SAW HIM EAT A HOT DOG
This is what they got? The defense argues that Bill Janklow had a diabetic episode when he killed the motorcyclist because he had nothing to eat all day.
Even when viewing the facts in a light most favorable to the defendant, isn't it conscious disregard to refrain from eating when one is an experienced diabetic and intent on tooling around the countryside in a death machine?
Tom Daschle muddies the waters some more by giving favorable testimony for Janklow. Damfacrats are bracing for the acquittal.

STUFFED SHIRT
John Kerry has been struggling to shed his uptight image. Motorcycles. Guitars. Now he has gone and taken a profanity-laced page from Mary's blog.
From Rolling Stone:
It is pretty cool - but it won't help. Dean is trouncing Kerry in New Hampshire and even beating him in his own state. Unelectable Yankees, both of them.

From Rolling Stone:
Did you feel you were blindsided by Dean's success?
Well, not blindsided. I mean, when I voted for the war, I voted for what I thought was best for the country. Did I expect Howard Dean to go off to the left and say, "I'm against everything"? Sure. Did I expect George Bush to fuck it up as badly as he did? I don't think anybody did.

French Magazine says 1700 US military quit Iraq.
PARIS, Dec 04, 2003 (Kyodo via COMTEX) -- One thousand and seven hundred U.S. soldiers have deserted their posts in Iraq, with many of them failing to return to military duty after getting permission to go back to the United States, according to the French weekly magazine Le Canard Enchaine.
The magazine, known for its satires and exposes, said the French intelligence agency obtained the information from what it described an "American colleague."
Citing a senior French official posted in Washington, the magazine also said that 7,000 U.S. soldiers have left Iraq allegedly due to psychological troubles and other illnesses.
Some 2,200 others sustained serious injuries including the loss of limbs, it said.
In a related Damfa update, the heroics of Steve McAlpin ended up giving his fellow Rochester, N.Y. reservists a new lease on life.
Abel did say that Capt. Steve McAlpin of the 401st influenced the Army's decision to clarify its deployment policy. His concerns about the legality of deploying soldiers before their "dwell time" was up caused a national media stir, which "had something to do with" the Army's clarification.

Raven is still tracking Howard Dean from the skies. From Media Life:
"Dean: First let's kill all the big media congloms"
During an appearance on MSNBC's "Hardball with Chris Matthews" [Monday], Dean said one of his goals as president would be to "break up giant media enterprises" because he is concerned about the influence media companies have over American communities. ... He then proceeded to contradict his earlier statements by saying that media conglomerates "can't be as big as they are today" - but that "I don't think we actually have to break them up."

Damfacrats have been getting a little psycho about the Jones story. OK, this post is not psycho, from Atrios, and a great supplement to Raven's post about the administration cherry-picking journalists for Dubya's jaunt to Iraq.
Furthermore, in case you missed it somehow, the turkey Bush brandished in that omnipresent Thanksgiving photo was plastic:Finally, uggabugga alerts us to a GOP plan to replace FDR's image on the dime with the image of ... um ... we "can't recall."
NOTICE: We shall be referring to President Bush as The Plastic Turkey for a while. If someone else thought of it first they deserve credit but Damfacrats are too lazy to go find them.

ASHCROFT'S COLLABORATIVE AGREEMENT FAILS
We are past the point of caring whether it's fair or balanced to blame Ashcroft for the latest act of police brutality in Cincinnati. As conservatives are so fond of saying about the accused, if he didn't do this, he did something else, so he deserves whatever he gets.
Here's what a black minister's group had to say:
We are past the point of caring whether it's fair or balanced to blame Ashcroft for the latest act of police brutality in Cincinnati. As conservatives are so fond of saying about the accused, if he didn't do this, he did something else, so he deserves whatever he gets.
A deal the city made with the Justice Department and black activists was intended to help prevent the kind of struggle that preceded Jones' death. The agreement reached last year was part of a collaboration that ended a racial profiling lawsuit and a Justice Department investigation of police practices.
It called on police to institute non-aggressive measures to help prevent repeats of several cases in which black men died in custody or while being arrested.
They included the 1997 shooting of a mentally ill man who threatened to throw a brick at officers; the 2000 death of a man who suffocated after being handcuffed; and the 2001 shooting of a man who ran from officers who tried to arrest him.
The latter case sparked three days of riots that ended only when a dusk-to-dawn curfew was imposed.
"We are concerned about what seemed like excessive force," the Rev. Calvin Harper, president of the Baptist Ministers Conference of Greater Cincinnati and Vicinity said Tuesday night.
"We also are concerned that there seems to be a rush to exonerate the police and an attempt to assassinate the character of Nathaniel Jones before all of the facts are in."
YOU SHOULD CARE
But you don't. We do. We were going to post a list of all the blogs on our blogroll that failed to discuss the Jones beating but it turned out (as of last night) to be much easier to list those that did: Buzzflash and What Really Happened.
The firemen should have cared, too.Perhaps this quote will satisfy those bloggers who chose to criticize NAACP's Julian Bond this week (read: Calpundit and Pandagon), instead of raising awareness of police brutality.
Two witnesses said Jones was yelling and talking to no one in the parking lot before he was beaten:AP Slideshow. The family's lawyer is getting an independent autopsy report but, oh, how silly, no government official would lie about something so important, would they?

Some people in the mostly black audience of 300 cried as they watched videotapes of the confrontation Sunday between six officers and Nathaniel Jones, 41. A video camera in a police cruiser showed that Jones swung at an officer, and that officers hit him repeatedly with nightsticks.
NAACP President Kweisi Mfume called police behavior "well outside the norm for subduing an unarmed suspect. ... No one wants to second-guess the police, but it's hard not to be sickened at the sight of the police beating this unarmed man."
Two witnesses said Jones was yelling and talking to no one in the parking lot before he was beaten:
"I didn't like it at all," Anna Gary said. "I was just thinking, 'What if it were my brother, or my son?' It could have been my dad. I just wouldn't want to see that again happen to anybody."

CORONER: JONES' DEATH A HOMICIDE
Police Beating
The only thing worse than a corporate stooge anchor on Faux or MSNBC is a second-tier understudy who has to one-up the regular host.
Take this fellow Malzberg, for example. Standing in for Joe Panhandle. This is his intro in regard to the Jones beating:
1. If it matters, Jones was reportedly just under 350 pounds. The host wants you to view the victim as a monster.
Many large individuals require two sets of cuffs behind the back, so ordering Jones to place them there could have been pointless. Damfacrats saw evidence of this in the unedited video, which featured a half dozen officers struggling over a motionless Jones, for 90 seconds, just to afix the cuffs.
2. The fact that he was on drugs (and had a mental condition) contradicts the argument that he should have complied to avoid a beating. Either he was cogent and refused or he was wasted and confused.
3. The host openly admits that he will be calling it "resisting arrest" instead of "police beating."
It is not the crime of "Resisting Arrest" unless proven beyond a reasonable doubt, which can only be done by proving that the "arrest" was lawful in the first place.
It is, however, undisputed that the incident involved both "police" and a "beating," so DAMFACRATS will be using the more accurate term.
No Lynching
After a sound clip is played where an angry woman demands an end to the "lynchings" in Cincinnati, Malzberg pretends he does not realize she was speaking figuratively:
1. Yeah, as long as there are no actual lynchings, what's the problem folks? One big hyperbole, of course, case closed.
2. He'd "love" to hear about one?
The Rodney King Rule
Monday night's Panhandle Country welcomed Malik Shabaz, head of Black Lawyers for Justice. Many of his comments are found in "Compliance," the latest Damfaudio.
Malzberg tries to make some more excuses for the cops, who were purportedly "begging" Jones to stay down. The nightstick "begs" pretty visciously we guess but, anyway, Shabaz explains that a person with reason to perceive he or she is being beaten ceaselessly has a right to attempt escape, if not self-defense.The rule is certainly not applicable in many situations but, as noted, Americans have the right to use reasonable force in preventing an unlawful arrest. Americans also have the right to use reasonable force to stave off the use of excessive force on them, particularly lethal force.
The Eggshell Rule
The coroner stated that Jones died as a result of the beating and struggle. The coroner stated that there was no internal organ injury or blows to the head. Assume this is true.
1. The corporate cable apologists would have us think that it is Jones' own fault he is dead because he was obese, had an enlarged heart and took drugs. Damfacrats concede that, if the autopsy is accurate, a healthy person probably would not have died from the beating.
2. Under the Eggshell Rule, it is no excuse to say "well, I only meant to beat him silly. How was I to know that he had a weak heart?" One must take the victim as one finds the victim, such that the bad actor is responsible for all the results of his or her bad actions.
This is the fair rule. A vulnerable person should not have less rights because of a greater susceptibility to severe injury from unjustified violence.
Really Drunk 1. Trying to slug a cop is not to be condoned but it is not punishable by death. The punch does not justify the beating, nor do the drugs in his body. This is America. Learn the rules, Malzberg.
2. As for the more obvious refutation, Jones was reportedly narcoleptic, possibly mentally ill and at least somewhat drug-addled. Think "really drunk," America, you can relate to that.
He was the object of government intrusion only because of a medical distress call. Like a frat buddy passed out on the lawn.
3. The coroner said that Jones had ingested cocaine within three hours and PCP within five hours. Damfacrats outdid their lazy selves with a little PCP research:This appears to be the "type of medical distress" that would cause spontaneous punch-attempts. Damfacrats wonder "what type of medical distress" would cause deliberate and repeated pummeling with a metal stick.
Grandma
If you listen carefully, there is a point in the video where Jones' struggle subsides, and it sounds like he begins calling out for his "Mama" as he is beaten.
Damfacrats realize that there is always a relative who claims the defendant is as harmless as a fly but we choose not to be cynical as we close with words from this man's grandmother:

You've been seeing a lot of that videotape where a 400-pound suspect who was high on cocaine PCP starting fighting with Cincinnati police officers. Most people are calling it a police beating. But SCARBOROUGH COUNTRY agrees with the mayor of Cincinnati that the use of force was justified. So, we will not be calling this a police beating. We'll be calling it resisting arrest.

May I cite the Rodney King rule? A black man being beaten by white officers on the ground cannot be expected to put his hands behind his back when clearly, his life is at stake.

what kind of medical distress actually causes one to throw punches at a police officer?

3. The coroner said that Jones had ingested cocaine within three hours and PCP within five hours. Damfacrats outdid their lazy selves with a little PCP research:
The peak effect is reached in 15 to 30 minutes after smoking the drug and abusers report that they stay "loaded" for 4 to 6 hours, then feel normal in 24 to 48 hours. ... While some users experience mild to intense euphoria, others feel threatened and because of fear, anxiety, or panic - can behave violently. The drug may also release hidden emotional or mental problems.
"Police talked about Skip like he was an animal," said Jones' grandmother, Bessie Jones.
"But he was wasn't. Skipper was just a good, old, fat, jolly fella."
THE TRUTH ABOUT OIL
Johnny 1mo directs our attention to a Guardian article posted at Common Dreams, which discusses the truth about the world's dwindling oil reserves.
For example, a recent discovery of reserves in British territory, dubbed a "huge find," "will supply the world with oil for five and a quarter days."
The article is not very optimistic, unlike the pollyanna running our country into the ground:
Johnny 1mo also sends us to this summation of miserable failures perpetrated by Dubya, in an article that Damfacrats had already read but should be viewed by everyone.

The article is not very optimistic, unlike the pollyanna running our country into the ground:
The only rational response to both the impending end of the oil age and the menace of global warming is to redesign our cities, our farming and our lives. But this cannot happen without massive political pressure, and our problem is that no one ever rioted for austerity. People tend to take to the streets because they want to consume more, not less. Given a choice between a new set of matching tableware and the survival of humanity, I suspect that most people would choose the tableware.

Members of law enforcement have been known to move within Damfacratic circles. Everyone in America should be grateful for police and appreciative of their nearly impossible job.
Nathaniel Jones was a victim of police brutality. The various apologist routines Damfacrats have witnessed among cable news anchors is reprehensible.
Even Savage, on the radio tonight, could not fully support these cops. He noted that animals are subdued more humanely.
Do people forget that there is such a thing as bad police? Their actions cannot always be justified and our support for them does not include support for the hysterical, pigheaded, legally indefensible and apparently fatal use of force.
Damfacrats will be posting a lot on this story, as it is the only one that has been considered for the last 24 hours.

A collection of the audio and video posted in recent weeks, as we have been remiss of late.
Listen to the irreverant William S. Burroughs Thanksgiving prayer after linking from this place.
Travel from very far away, to very close, in 40 jumps.
Go here and listen to JFK's younger brother railing against "poison pill" Medicare during a Sunday night Senate.
This is Triumph the Insult Comic Dog (of the Conan O'Brien Show) being interviewed by Terry Gross on NPR. Triumph begins (at about 12:30) to react to the interview just like Bill Oh Really did when Terry interviewed him, as you can hear at this place. Meanwhile, the Damfacratic take on the Oh Really interview can be heard in "Biased Air," which was promulgated the day after it took place.
What you hear at this post is not edited. FNC actually used it exactly the way you hear it.
Finally, don't forget to listen to the special Dogaudio blues supplement, which is much better than OK.

Grudges, in any event, do not play well in a small state where leaders and voters rub elbows daily in the grocery store, the post office or while pumping gas. Instead, partisan discord often is resolved in spirited hockey games featuring Democrats versus Republicans.
Dean was known on the ice for his "cut and thrust" technique, said Willard Sterne Randall, a professor at Vermont's Champlain College. The same determination marked his style as governor, Randall said.

Other leading physicists, in Baghdad interviews, said the hope for an Iraqi atomic bomb was never realistic. "It was all like building sand castles,'' said Abdel Mehdi Talib, Baghdad University's dean of sciences.
Seven months after a U.S.-British invasion toppled Saddam's Baath Party government, Iraqi scientists have grown more vocal in countering Bush administration claims, used to justify the war, that Baghdad had "reconstituted'' nuclear weapons development, and that it once was a mere six months from making a bomb.***
"Iraq's Nuclear Mirage,'' a chronicle of years of secret weapons work and of a final escape into exile, is part of this senior scientist's emergence from a low profile in Canada -- intended to refute what he calls a "massive deception'' in Washington that led the United States into war.
Months of searching by hundreds of U.S. experts have found no trace of nuclear, chemical or biological weapons in Iraq, just as U.N. inspectors found none before the war. No Iraqi scientists have confirmed the programs were revived in recent years.
Bush administration officials still speak, nonetheless, of a threat from such weapons -- of Baghdad's ``robust plans'' for them, as Vice President Dick Cheney puts it -- in defending last March's U.S. invasion of Iraq. They offer no hard evidence, however.
When challenged in a question period after his address, Wolfowitz said he was "astonished" the credibility of the United States was being called into question given Saddam's track record.
"The real issue is, can you trust Saddam Hussein?" he asked. "And it seems to me the record is absolutely clear that you can't ... we are trusting our security in the hands of a man who makes ricin, who makes anthrax, who makes botulinum toxin, who makes aflatoxin, and who has no compunctions whatsoever about consorting with terrorists. Who do you want to trust?"

THREE TIMES A CHARM
Damfacrats have been painfully aware of the rubbish that the Associated Dean has been printing about General Clark. This excerpt is another example: This was not a long article. We didn't catch the TV spot but it is safe to assume that the General had a lot more to say.
Why would the Dean Press write it this way?
Damfacrats can only speculate but perhaps they hope that presenting these comments will paint a crazed Clark who repeats himself over and over again. The Clark-as-Stockdale approach.
Another possibility is that they want to present Clark as a knee-jerk nay-sayer who is just another Democrat trying to rain on everyone's parade.
So, say it with us and click your heels: We're not going to vote for Howard Dean. We're not going to vote for Howard Dean. We're not going to vote for Howard Dean.

``I think the country has to understand: we're not winning the war on terror. We are not winning the war on terror,'' Clark said. ``This administration took us into Iraq. It's a world-class bait and switch.''

ASSOCIATED DEAN: POT-USE NO BIG DEAL
While, of course, Damfacrats have no issue with candidates smoking a fatty back in the day, Dean supporters should not be fooled: middle America still doen't like it and Wes Clark never did it.

A reservist questioned a waiver that would force him back into Iraq in violation of federal law. His career is over.
About two weeks ago, he said, soldiers being redeployed at the 401st were asked to sign a waiver of Title X rights, a provision of the U.S. Code since 1953. Most of the officers refused to sign and all but four of the enlisted personnel called to redeploy agreed to sign, said McAlpin.
"If an officer said to sign something, you signed it -- that's what I did as a kid," said McAlpin of his own 12 years as an enlisted man. "Now I'm a little older, a little wiser and my mouth is a lot bigger."
The waiver -- "totally inappropriate," said McAlpin -- was created by Col. Guy Sands, commander of the 401st's parent unit, the 360th Civil Affairs Brigade based in Fort Jackson, S.C. Both units fall under the command of the 352nd Civil Affairs Command at Fort Bragg, N.C.
THE ASSOCIATED DEAN
The AP continues to smear Clark. Check out this latest piece of junk, which uses a headline to suggest that Clark was involved with Waco, even though the article completely discounts it. The headline should be within the quote from Taylor, backed up by internal Army documents, who says that Clark was not: The Dean Press made sure to leave open the "possibility" that a unit under Clark "supplied ammunition." Yeah, that's right, Wes basically set fire to the ranch single-handedly on his way to starting WWIII while wearing a GOP button and contradicting himself, so vote for Dean and watch Bush win 45 states.

Officer: Clark Indirectly Involved in Waco
involved in the planning or execution of the Waco operation in any way, shape, form or fashion,'' says retired Army Lt. Gen. Horace Grady ``Pete'' Taylor, who ran the Fort Hood military base 60 miles from the site of the Waco siege.
Waco ``was a civilian operation that the military provided some support to'' and ``any decisions about where the support came from were my decisions, not General Clark's,'' Taylor said this week.
``Clark's totally innocent in this regardless of what anybody thinks about him,'' says Taylor, Clark's former commander. ``He played no direct role in this activity nor did any of us.''
