TWO EXCERPTS FROM SUNDAY POST ARTICLE
Despite the official web site's promotion of this Washington Post article as mostly favorable, it is not. Someone at the NY Times is giving Clark a chance but Damfacrats find the AP and the Post to be rather hostile.
Below are two legitimately positive and new excerpts:
'In 1981, he told an interviewer that his pull toward military service was a "southern thing . . . a belief that this was the right thing to do, to be an Army officer. It was not romantic . . . West Point was simply a means to a end."'
"Dan Christman, a West Point friend and retired general, said that when he became very ill with spinal meningitis in the early 1980s -- before screening techniques for HIV-tainted blood were fully developed -- Clark doggedly canvassed their entire War College class to find a suitable blood donor for his friend, and he did."

THE NEW LABEL
Damfa
The Asshats have picked out a new hate label for us: The Secularists. In other words; Godless Communists.
CAN WE HEAR FROM THE SECULAR CONSERVATIVE LIBERTARIANS PLEASE???!?!?! As in, stop sitting by and tacitly supporting these religious nuts in the White House before its too late.

The Tort Reformists are at it again in the Senate. They want to squash the rights of regular people who band together and seek redress for mass grievances. They want to handcuff class action suits and stuff them into an already ridiculously clogged Federal Court system.
The idea is that evil trial lawyers are against the regular folks in America. Lawyers want to drum up phony litigation to extort corporations, who will pass on the cost of heightened insurance to consumers. This is BS of the highest order, for many reasons, not the least of which is that the vast majority of proposed class actions are never certified to continue.
No lawyer will take a case when ten dollars is on the line, which is another reason why class actions are vital. If 10 million people get scammed for ten dollars, the tort reformers would apparently prefer to see 10 million lawsuits, rather than one class action. This makes no sense, until you consider the reality: no one will sue and the coporate ripoffs will go unpunished.
The proposed "reform" is just another way for corporations to get a free pass. Why do Americans want to remove their own rights for the benefit of rich corporations?
The people who agree with this proposal are the same people who agree with repealing the so-called "Death" tax. The percentage of people who are affected by the tax on huge estates is so small that the Estate tax can only benefit the regular folks. No one will ever tax their estate but, somehow, people have been convinced that a Republican concept of "fairness" is more important than taxing 100 million dollar estates to our benefit.
People will learn their lesson one day, after tort reform, when they and all their neighbors get scammed by a company, and they have nowhere to go.

New Damfaudio - "Matinee Idol"
Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld answers his own questions and hits a few wiffleballs thrown to him by John Kasich, host of "From the Heartland." Kasich also sits in for O'Reilly in the No Spine Zone.
While heaping praise on the Secretary with so-called analysts, the Faux stooge gets some guy's book title wrong and makes it worse when he tries to joke about it. America is only graced with "Heartland" on Saturday nights.

WHY DAVIS LOST
UPDATE: Raven claims that Bush never gave up drinking entirely? Can anyone verify this?
"I think (President) Bush, you know, might be drinking a little champagne tonight. But in the morning, we still gotta wake up to three million people unemployed," said Bob Mulholland, campaign adviser to California's Democratic Party.
Of course, Bush doesn't drink since his Jim Beam and DUI days. Supposedly. Damfacrats noticed Bush was toasting with Asian dignitaries this week, using what appeared to be champagne. Couldn't be...could it?

DIEBOLD VOTING MACHINE SCAM/ERROR IN CALI
Damfa
According to numbers analyzed by Mark Crispin Miller at his weblog, Wally O'Dell and his Republican voting machine company appear to have monkeyed with the vote in the California governor recall.
The vote count shows many of the extreme fringe candidates - nobodies, essentially - receiving unheard of numbers of votes in counties where the Wally World machines were used. This suggests that the machines, whether malfunctioning or rigged, skimmed votes cast for top candidates and counted them for the nobodies.
18% of California counties use Diebold machines. Kunzman received 91.75% of his votes from counties with Diebold machines and Sprague received 65%.
One candidate, Palmieri, was stunned to learn of the results. He received nearly 70% of his votes in Wally World counties. His platform was "don't vote for me" and he had no particular inspiring or local connection to the counties.
The other way to understand this is that several no-name candidates got 50 to 100 times more votes than reasonably predicted in counties where Wally World votes were cast. Not enough to influence the outcome.
However, machine error in Los Angeles County caused one half of the state's uncounted recall answers and Jesse Jackson says reckless cost-cutting eliminated 2/3 of L.A. voting locations.
Of course, if there were paper receipts, all this could be worked out with a phone call or two. Diebold chooses not to make or modify machines to print receipts and, as Damfacratic readers know, Wally O'Dell is a huge Republican supporter.

Catman alerts Damfacrats to an engineer association's report card on American infrastructure. A lot of D's handed out and a predicted 1.5 trillion dollars over the next five years required to make better marks. Catman also noted the excellent Village Voice article that used quotes from Cheney and Clark, which were posted by Damfacrats prior to the Voice article. ("Vice Fearmonger," October 12, and September Clark post somewhere).

RAVEN ALERT: HIGH COURT BLOWS OFF FEDS
Damfa
Raven took time out from his work day to note an important decision by the U.S. Supreme Court, who have really been getting a lot right these days.
The Court denied review of a lower court holding that George W. Bush may not punish doctors for discussing cannabis with their ill patients.
"In their appeal, federal prosecutors argued that doctors who recommend marijuana are interfering with the drug war and circumventing the government's judgment that the illegal drug has no medical benefit."
Damfacratic presidential frontrunner Wesley Clark opposes the current federal policy of punishing doctors sick smokers in states where medical marijuana is legal.
"Attorney General John Ashcroft had no comment on the decision, while White House spokeswoman Claire Buchan restated the Bush administration's position on the topic, saying: "As a matter of policy we oppose any efforts to legalize marijuana."

BREAKFAST IN BED
Damfa
It appears that Chris Matthews may finally be siding with the good guys. His overt distaste for Clinton sometimes obscures his true bent but the Hardball host was once a top aide to Speaker Tip O'Neil. A Damfacrat's in there somewhere.
Tonight he asked Republican has-been Dick Army, "do you think the American people like serving Iraqis breakfast in bed?"
The other day he said: "Can you imagine what $87 billion would do for Worcester? It's unimaginable." Chris even mentioned Halliburton a whole bunch of times tonight.
John Edwards likes to pound that Halliburton issue. Maybe Chris Matthews reached his limit when he interviewed John Edwards last night. Matthews had a suprised look on his face every time the candidate's basic message triggered thunderous approval from the live college audience.
All media people should be insulted that the administration is now accusing the media of deceiving the American people away from war. They are using all the same language that critics have used about pre-war hype, in a know-you-are-but-what-am-I routine.
Just ask Bill O'Reilly. Everything and everybody is "defamatory" lately. According to the Petrolicans, the media is a multi-headed "filter" that "misleads" the public and provides selective information about Iraq. That sure sounds familiar.
Dick Army said the good news goes unreported and the bad news gets "exagerated." Sounds a lot like pre-Iraq America, when the "bad news" (hoping to harbor plans to threaten programs) got "exaggerated" and the "good news" we never heard was that Saddam was no threat to us.
"Well, where should we report dead soldiers, on page 17? Would that be more balanced?" reporter Chris O'Donnell pressed.
"There's over 1000 badly wounded soldiers I never hear about," said Matthews.
Just in time for the post-season, maybe Hardball is finally tired of being Wiffleball.

SHAPED, SHADED, EXAGGERATED III
Damfa
"Let there be no mistake - right up until the end, Saddam Hussein continued to harbor ambitions to threaten the world with weapons of mass destruction and to hide his illegal weapons programs." -- Condoleeza Rice.
That sharp lady, a real shing star. Saddam went from harboring weapons and terrorists to merely harboring "ambitions ... to threaten .. and hide ...programs."
If there was a comma after "ambitions," the words "continued to" would qualify the phrase "threaten the world with weapons." Typical.
The adminsitration has been throwing around the Kaye claim of a "biological agent" they discovered. In reality, this is one vial of bacteria-grade botulism ( not weapons-grade) which had been "hidden" in a scientist's refrigerator since 1993. It seems Saddam hid "programs" so well that they can't be found at all.
Damfacrats are so sick of hearing from Dr. Rice that we should "make no mistake" or "be reminded" or "understand" something that has been said a thousand times. Especially when the VERY GOAL of her parsing is to give Americans a MISTAKEN impression about the threat.

NOT OUT OF THE WOODS RE: WMD FRAME-UP
Damfa
While the latest report from Dave Kaye led Damfacrats to believe that the adminsitration had decided not to plant evidence in the WMD case like the LAPD might, the possibility is always out there. Thanks to MSNBC's article for explaining how easy it would be.
Consider the convenient decision to start destroying stockpiles of U.S. chem and bio weapons this summer. Perhaps a few fell off the truck on the way to the incinerator?
As a result of a security flaw, "most of Iraq's supply of biological weaponry actually came from the United States: ordered and delivered to the Iraqis over the course of a decade starting in 1985 by the U.S. Army's main biological laboratory in Frederick, Md."
Over about a decade between the mid-1980s and 1996, when this unfathomable security flaw was discovered, Iraq ordered and received 24 different strains of biological samples from the Army, including the military-grade 'Fort Detrick strain' of anthrax."
Unfortunately, the unfathomable has happened again. Members of the Defense Department appeared before Congress on Tuesday to explain why U.S. equipment pertaining to making biological weapons, including a biological safety cabinet, a bacteriological incubator, an evaporator and protective clothing, were sold on the internet to places including Pakistan and Egypt.

VICE FEARMONGER
Cheney called the possibility of terrorists acquiring weapons of mass destruction "the ultimate nightmare" that "could bring devastation to our country on a scale we have never experienced. Instead of losing thousands of lives, we might lose tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands of lives in a single day of horror. ... "There's no containing a terrorist who will commit suicide for the purposes of mass slaughter. There's also no containing a terrorist state that secretly passes along deadly weapons to a terrorist network."

SUPRISINGLY ACCURATE ENQUIRER ARTICLE Damfa
Damfacrats, for the first time in history, purchased a copy of the National Enquirer. Although Damfacrats would not normally expound on someone else's mental health problems, the reader should keep in mind that, according to Al Franken, Rush Limbaugh called a recently deceased Jerry Garcia "a dead doper."
"All these pills are enough to kill an elephant, never mind a man," said Limbaugh Houskeeper/Drug Dealer Wilma Cline while passing a polygraph test, inadvertantly joining the Damfacratic prediction of Republican collapse in 2004.
Limbaugh kissed and groped the housekeeper to check if "she was wired by cops" and hid stashes in his golf bag, referring to money as "cabbage," scores as the "mother load," and telling the housekeeper to "double bag the empties so the missus won't see through the bag." Note the bizarre parallel with Arnold's molestations.
He sent emails begging for pills and "I don't care how or what you do but you better - better- get me some more" was the sum and substance of an angry phone call ending with a click.
He met Cline regularly for deals in the parking lot of Denny's or an Amoco gas station next to a biker bar. Appropriately, Denny's got busted for forcing blacks to pre-pay and Damfacrats are strongly opposed to fossil fuel and motorcycle noise pollution.
Cline said that Limbaugh almost became a dead doper during his second attempt at rapid detoxification. In one of his emails, he seemed to describe his habit: "100 = 2.5 to 3 days ... of the little blues ... but I will cut down ...but I kind of want to go out with a bang, if you get my drift. Hee hee hee."
Rush is under investigation but has not been charged. He checked into rehab and hired Roy Black as his attorney, who he routinely denegrated during the William Kennedy Smith trial.

CATMAN ALERTS DAMFACRATS TO ENRON-SCWARTZY CONNECTION
Catman sent a valuable bit of information regarding the (now-successful) plot to excuse 9 billion dollars in rip-off California money that went to Enron. At one point will Americans see the light? Alas, maybe never, but Greg Palast will keep trying and Damfacrats thank him for it.
By the way, Jilly noted that Arnold's last name contains the word "war."

PANHANDLE JOE'S GARAGE
Damfa
During an inane story about Bruce Spingsteen, Florida panhandle native Joe Scarborough invoked the words of the late composer, Frank Zappa. Joe was upset that The Boss would question the President at a concert and said, "Maybe Bruce should take Frank Zappa's advice: 'Shut up and play your guitar.'"
If Zappa were still alive he might advise Joe to eat a little more Confinement Loaf and stop distorting the meaning of album titles on behalf of the Central Scrutinizer.

RAVEN MEDIA POLL AND EMILY'S LIST SPEAK VOLUMES

Raven sent a bit of media statistics our way, illustrating the Fox News effectiveness of its "We Report You Decide" style.
It turns out that Fox Watchers are most likely to be misinformed about Iraq, with 80% having at least one misperception and 25% who think that world opinion favored the war.
Meanwhile, 77% of NPR/PBS viewers, the best-informed, had no misperceptions (Read: "Biased Air").
Also, the AP reports that The Emily's List Women's
Monitor poll of 2000 women shows the Democratic candidate having an 18-point advantage over Bush among women with more than a college education. Conversely, the Democratic candidate was nine points behind Bush among women with a high school education or less.

DEBATE IN ARIZONA
Damfa
Damfacrats are watching the debate as this is being written. This "Judy" person is not very nice. Brit Hume was less hostile at the Fox News debate.
Wes Clark must be the frontrunner because other candidates are assaulting him with everything they can muster. Wes looks and sounds a little panicked. He needs to take a little less instruction from his political advisors and just be himself. His rebuttals sound slightly pre-fabricated tonight.
Kerry displays shameless negativity and distortion by accusing Clark of "would-have" voting for the war resolution when Kerry himselfactually did.
Lieberman tries to spin it as him being "consistently" pro-war, and that he has integrity because he still believes it was "a just war." Joe should realize that being consistently wrong isn't as good as being correct eventually. He takes desperate cheap-shots from his dream world, wherein he has a chance of being nominated or elected.
Edwards looks and sounds better than ever. He wisely avoids attacking the others, as does Carol and Al.
Only Congressman Dennis Kucinich (hero) can say he actually voted against the war resolution. Clark and Dean shouldn't be called out for what they "might have" done or "would have" done on Medicare or the war or anything else.
In tandum with "The Most Trusted Name" ostrich approach regarding Robert Novak, CNN's host viciously pecked at any hint of negativity toward Bush. It's OK, though. The Bush-is-Bad philosophy seems to have legs of its own.

GRAHAM DROPS OUT AS DAMFACRATS PREDICTED
Damfa
"Bob Graham has currency in his home state of Florida, which, as noted, is a key state. He has the status of an elder statesman and he is holding on to the hope of getting the VP nomination. It's too bad his image and style does nothing for the masses because his message is usually excellent. He will be the first to step aside." - from "Each Democrat Plays a Role," September 25.
Damfacrats recall when the former Governor of Florida got one of the first real laughs among the field, in a response to Dean's claim of hailing from the "Democratic wing of the Democratic party." At the end of Graham's closing statement he declared, "My name is Bob Graham and I come from the electable wing of the Democratic party."
The former Chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, who voted against the war, had a campaign characterized by some very bad but quaint singing and a story about his notebook, in which he obsessively recorded the mundane events of each day. He also worked normal jobs for a day every now and then.
John McGlaughlin noticed Bob's anti-Bush-lies rhetoric early in the summer and credited him with "leading the charge up San Juan Hill!"

His exploration of the Republican Party did not go well. In his own words, he said that after becoming discouraged, after trying to speak out and not being heard by the Republican Party, he came back, depressed, to Arkansas. He was sorting through the belongings of his biological father - Benjamin Kanne - and came across a small card which read "Delegate - Democratic National Convention".
Clark, as near to emotionalism as he allows, said "I knew then what I had to do, I had come home."

ARNOLD USES BROOM PROP
Damfa
Incredibly, Damfacrats just witnessed a news clip of Arnold addressing a crowd with a broom in his hand, proclaiming "Let's clean house."
Those who have seen "O Brother Where Art Thou" will recall Homer Stokes, the reform party candidate who ran against Gov. Pappy O'Daniel. Homer, the "friend of the little man," held a broom aloft and declared the need to "sweep the state clean."
Homer Stokes was eventually exposed as a Klan leader and literally ridden out of the town hall on a rail. Appropriately, Arnold has cuddled up with Kurt Waldheim and once praised Hitler as a "hero." The only thing missing from Arnie's recreation of "O Brother," was the midget dressed identically and waving his broom in unison. Hmm, I wonder who could play that part?

Thanks to the good people at Clarkmyths.com, who set the record straight on a bunch of feeble nonsense the bad guys keep trying to sell to the American public.
Some excerpts:
The general who led NATO's forces in Kosovo believes the bombing campaign might not have been necessary if new electronic methods of waging war had been used to force President Slobodan Milosevic into submission.
General Wesley Clark, the outgoing supreme allied commander in Europe, stunned a (post-Kosovo) session of the US senate armed forces committee by calling for a complete rethink of western strategy and questioning the need for the aerial assault on Serbia, which caused an estimated 1,500 civilian casualties and came close to losing the propaganda war.
His testimony was the highest level of endorsement so far given to the use of forms of "cyberwar" which, their supporters argue, could have stopped Serb ethnic cleansing faster and with far less bloodshed.
***
One reason that many humanitarians strongly support Wesley Clark is detailed in Samantha Power's book A Problem from Hell - Clark was the only high ranking US official to push to prevent the genocide there - one that was not stopped, and which lead to 500,000 people being hacked to death, and touching off a war which has killed, according to the UN, perhaps as many as 3,000,000 people.
The US - with Wesley Clark as one of the "quiet heroes" of the process - forced a negotiated peace in Bosnia. Clark himself acted as military attache to Richard Holbrooke during the process, and risked his life to try and save three diplomats in an overturned Armored Personnel Carrier.

Do you still back Clark?
I have serious reservation about him. Yeah, he's better than W,
but...who's not!
How do you respond to this piece below? (I heard a piece on Democracy Now!
making similar criticisms)

DC
Dear Dave,
The answer to your question is yes. I still back Wesley Clark. The main reason is his good chance of actually winning. I would love to bring more awareness to and move in the direction of Dennis Kucinich's ideas. Unfortunately, this is not a time to take chances on long-shots.
Besides Clark's chances, I honestly think he would make a wise and restrained President, who would avoid war whenever he could. When I first saw him give a real speech to Democrats on CSPAN, I immediately went online and tried to find anything negative that I could.
This was in early June, before anyone knew who he was, really, but there was the "WWIII" stuff and much of the other criticism your email raised. It is being raised by both the far right and far left sides of politics, by the way, which tells me we found the right shepard for the lost sheep of America.
I will leave aside the compliments for Clark and address the writing you forwarded to me. You can find a lot about Clark's pro-choice, pro-environment, pro-marijuana and pro-minority views at damfacrats.blogspot.com and lots of other places.
The piece suggests that Wes Clark is just a massive scam perpetrated by militarists because he does not mean any of the anti-war things he says. If that is true, he has fooled Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, Charles Rangel, all their allies and yours truly with this kind of statement, one of many:
"The military knocked things down in Iraq and Afghanistan. It's very good at knocking things down. But now we have to build things, and the military's not very good at building things. It's not about building things. It's about allowing what you've built to be destroyed. It's about allowing people you love to be killed."
The article you sent starts with the claim that Clark has "plunged" in as some kind of opportunist. Clark criticized the decision to go to war for months before it happened and people have been asking him to run for President for a long time, especially back when the country was insane with warmongering and flag-waving, and he was talking sense.
No question he found a few supportive ways to comment on the war during the CNN days but those that you sent are so far out of context. No doubt he praised the outcome of the military activities, but such compliments are removed from the substantive political and moral issues. Check out these pre-war Iraq comments, made publicly, during the really scary anti-dissent days when no one on TV was saying things like it:
FEBRUARY 2003: "The administration has never been able to make the case effectively...The American public doesn't understand the urgency of this, and there's not broad support. ... My concern is that this is a political issue; the president and his party put this forward.''
You will see a lot more of these kind of statements as the video files get dredged. He was always against the idea of going into Iraq, especially without international help, and even Damfacrats believed that Saddam might have WMD until he didn't use them on our troops in March.
I have heard a lot about the Kosovo war. Most of it just falls under the "military candidate" consideration. Of course he has killed and ordered killing. He was a general and that is what they do when they are ordered into battle. I have a brother who was ready to kill and die in the Marines, an uncle who fought in Vietnam and a grandfather who made bomb gyroscopes during WWII. It doesn't make me love them any less.
I sincerely believe that Wes Clark's role as military leader does not make him eager to fight - it makes him understand all the reasons not to fight. Saying the US is militarily superior is just a fact, as he pointed out, and his statements are deterrence-based -"Take us on? Don't try!" (April 2003) is remarkably the opposite of "Bring em' on," and we know who said that.
As far as I know, it is completely untrue that he "targeted civilians to demoralize." In fact, all other criticism I have heard complains that he "pushed for ground troops." I also know that, frankly, Clark was acquitted of some war-crime accusations in regard to the bombing.
This "I'm not starting World War III for you" thing concerned an order to block a runway. Blocking a runway doesn't start a war, as far as I know, but invading a country with 300,000 troops sure does, for which Kerry, Gephart, Lieberman and even Hillary voted.
In the end, the U.S. lost only one life to hostility in Kosovo, when a soldier stepped on a mine. Everything I read tells me that Clinton saved 1.5 million Albanians from ethnic cleansing by intervening in Kosovo, a decision Clinton deeply regrets not making about Rwanda, so, hopefully, there was a legitimate greater good in what Clark did.
You will also hear how Wesley Clark voted for Nixon and Reagan (gasp) but what you will rarely hear is that he voted for Al Gore in 2000.
Damfacrats, meanwhile, voted for Nader in a sure-thing Gore state. Damfacrats also circled the federal building downtown in early March, with about 150 other brave souls who hate war.
Once we haved restored some sanity and competence to the White House, we can look to a Dean or Kucinich to really get to work but, for now, its Tough Love time, because America cannot risk, tolerate or survive four more Bush years.

Dear Dave,
The answer to your question is yes.

WRONG, SHADY, CHEAP
""It's wrong, it's shady, it's cheap,'' said Wes Clark, regarding the adminstration's leak of the identity of Joe Wilson's wife, a CIA agent, in retaliation for his Uranium/Niger exposure.
Do people suspect that Karl Rove, Senior Advisor to President Bush, was behind the leak that exposed the CIA agent's identity? Just ask photographers and the New York Times:
"The focus on Rove brought an odd twist to Bush's travels. When the president boarded Air Force One at Andrews Air Force Base outside of Washington, he walked up the steps and waved -- and not a single camera followed. He looked perplexed. All lenses were trained on Rove at the bottom of the steps."

CONTROVERSIAL STANCE ON DO-NOT-CALL
Damfa
Among hated professions, telemarketers are near the top of the list. Lawyers are right up there, too. The important thing for Damfacrats is that judges do not move any higher on this Do-Not-Like list.
Which is why, for now, Damfacrats oppose the Do-Not-Call list and support the decision to strike it down as unconstitutional.
When White House spokesman Scott McClellan makes a statement, such as he did today, claiming that Americans "have the right" to this list, Damfacrats cringe. A federal judge just decided that the list violates the First Amendment of the Constitution. At that moment, the judge was saying, "America, you don't have the right."
Judges interpret the law. It may sound like an obvious point but, in today's anti-judicial climate, it is an important one. Not the President, nor Congress, nor 50 million Americans have any say as to whether this list violates the Constitution.
When a federal judge says the Do-Not-Call list violates free speech, the reaction should not be one where people talk of a "victory" if the list continues. This is not a battle between judges and Americans. Judges preserve and protect our rights, which include unpopular ones, such as the right to go door to door and sell things and the right to call your number and talk to you if you answer.
Not to mention the fact that this list will cost hundreds of thousands of Americans their jobs. It will remove revenue from the economy as a 50-75 billion dollar industry gets
decimated. Better to be bothered occasionally by an unwanted phone call than to see more people get tossed out of work.
If appeals to higher courts fail, America will need a Do-Not-Call amendment to the Constitution in order to keep such a list in place. Thank you, I'm not interested.
If an appeal to a higher judicial bench is successful, Damfacrats will reconsider their talking point on this issue. Until such time, we oppose laws that violate free speech rights and we oppose Contempt of Court.

RANGEL TO VISIT DAMFATOWN OCT 18
Damfacratic leaders met with Clark leaders again tonight. The word is that the state party leaders want to launch the state campaign right here in our humble city.
The big news is that Charles Rangel will definitly be here, with the hint that, if it is organized well enough, the General himself may appear. Damfacrats will gladly settle for the esteemed Congressman.
UPDATE: To quote Doc Halloran from Kubrick's The Shining, Damfacrats reported this and "turned out to be totally unreliable a--holes."

Albania, which sent 70 peacekeepers to the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, expects U.S. support for military reforms aimed at qualifying for NATO (news - web sites) membership. The country landed $3 million in U.S. military aid in exchange for sending its troops, and Washington also covered the costs of the deployment.

CLARK CLARIFIES HIS POSITIONS
Damfa
On Friday evening, Clark participated in a Town Hall meeting in New Hampshire. He took the opportunity to clarify many of his positions. By the way, Wes has stated publicly that he voted for Al Gore in 2000.
As far as Damfacrats are aware, no major-party candidate has ever gone near the word "marijuana" on the Presidiential trail, except when noting it as a gateway drug. When Wes Clark was asked if he would continue the current Federal policy of prosecuting medical marijuana use in states that had made it legal, the general had a one word answer: "no."
He had a similarly straightforward answer when asked if he would encourage or discourage an anti-gay marriage amendment. "I would discourage that kind of amendment," he said.
Clark made it clear that he would not support any extensions or additions to the Patriot Act. He also said it should undergo scrutiny so Americans can determine if it is used, needed or wanted, because he sees no reason for it.
In regard to the tax cuts, Clark's plan would repeal them for the top 2% of income-earners. He endorsed a progressive tax and openly stated that he believes those who make more should pay more.
His environmental ideal is to reduce the dependence on foreign energy "down to zero." He demands a renewable energy policy, supports increased mileage standards for automobiles, and opposes oil drilling in Alaska. He is a "huntin and fishin" environmentalist.
His foreign policy stance against the Iraq "blunder" is well-known but he also clarified his disappointment at our failure to help in Liberia. Damfacrats came out in favor of helping Liberia a month ago. ("Real Juju" Aug. 28)

REFINERY FIRES RAGING FULL ON
Damfa
A propane pipeline blew up in Illinois today. ConocoPhillips is blaming it on lightning. Again? Also today, a "flaming boat" drifted toward the Benicia refinery in California, where firefighters lined up, just in case. The flaming boat drifted the other way.
Sep. 24 - Houston Centerpoint refinery explosion. Quote from witness: "It was real hot, like the sun, but it wasn't the sun, it was the fire."
Sep. 23 - ExxonMobil refinery fire in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Sep. 22 - In Edmond, Oklahoma, 160,000 gallons of crude spilled in a park after a bulldozer ruptured a BP America pipeline.
Sep. 21 - A Simga-Aldrich Corp. chemical plant exploded in Miamisburg, Ohio for unknown reasons, causing 2000 people to evacuate a Dayton suburb. Quote from plant worker: "I've never been this scared in my life.''
Sep. 18 - Pueblo, Colorado Depot, storing 50-year-old chemical weapons, detects "low-level" mustard gas leaks.
Sep. 17 - Ten-minute fire at ChevronTexaco energy research facility adjacent to refinery in Richmond, California.
Sep. 14 - Valero refinery fire in Houston, Texas.
Sep. 10 - Small fire at PPL nuclear power plant near Berwick, Pa
Sep. 3 - One man injured by explosion at Conoco refinery in Billings, Montana.
Related: A New Jersey abandoned chemical plant is leaking toxins. "The owner of the factory, Robert Lindley, apparently left a note saying he would be gone on vacation for two weeks but he never returned to the factory."
Semi-related: Four incenidary devices found in Michigan water-bottling plant on Thursday. ELF takes responsibility.

DOWN FOR DEAN
Damfa
During the debate, Dick Gephart went after Howard Dean and accused him of "would-have" voting with Newt Gingrich on Medicare cuts. Dean said he was "ashamed" that Gephart would compare any candidate with Newt Gingrich and claimed he's done more for health care than Richard Gephart ever has.
John Kerry started badly with some bourgeoise crack about "the ticker" being "down." He won points with his firm stance on maintaining middle class tax cuts, unlike Dean and Gephart.
In post-debate commentary, Chris Matthews and Keith Olberman openly mimicked Kerry's longish face. Chris Matthews is right when he says that Gephart must win Iowa or he is finished.
Matthews likes Dean and compliments him because Dean is outside the Clinton circle, which Matthews despises.
Damfacrats sure like that Howard Dean, too. But, as William Jefferson Clinton told us recently, while we can "fall in love" with any of the candidates during the primary, we all must "fall in line" next year.

REVEREND WELCOMES GENERAL
Damfa
Al Sharpton, as "the only New Yorker," paid some Rangel-ized respect to Wesley Clark during the debate. He said he wanted to welcome the General to New York City and advised him not to be defensive about his embryonic Democratic allegiance.
"Better to be a new Democrat and a real Democrat" than these "old Democrats," the Reverend Al said, "who have been acting like Republicans lately."
Clark did fine because he looked good, made no major errors and the others did not attack him. This is Chess, not Checkers. He gave some fuzzy answers but was careful to clarify a response in there somewhere when it counted.
Notes are bad but he handled them well and it gives him an underdog charm. Still, he may want to reconsider emphasizing the fact that he has only been in politics for nine days, even though it had to be said to excuse his supposed "contradiction" about Iraq.
His voice was somewhat damaged from speeches. He met his goals and stayed on message: I'm proud to be a patriotic Democrat and Bush needs to go.

EACH CANDIDATE PLAYS A ROLE
Damfa
The question has been raised as to why some of the 10 candidates have not yet dropped out and gotten out of the way of those who might actually have a chance of winning the nomination. The answer is that each candidate plays a specific role in regard to mobilizing the support needed to win next November.
Al Sharpton is actually doing better than several of the other candidates. He has the ear of Black voters, who vote 90%+ Democratic. The party needs Sharpton to register voters and encourage Black voter participation. As he pointed out a few weeks ago, if the same number of Blacks that voted in 1984 had voted in 2000, Al Gore would be President. Also, Al Sharpton is the dominant orator and can afford to make strong statements that the others cannot.
Dennis Kucinich is a liberal's liberal. He whips up the far left contingency and sounds the alarm for lower class and working class voters. He stands firmly on principle and reminds us that it is not outrageous to suggest pulling right out of Iraq, rather than throwing good money after bad and letting more soldiers die in pursuit of a failed adventure. Damfacrats dig his ideas for a Department of Peace and reducing Pentagon budgets. Think Ohio.
Carol Mosely-Braun also motivates the Black vote but particularly, she bends the ears of women who feel strongly about the female pursuit of real power in America. She has made some bad gaffes, including frank misstatements of the law and contradictory policy positions. She was the first and only Black female Senator. She will be the second to go.
Joe Lieberman, unfortunately, needs to stick around as the icon for the bitter robbery of the 2000 Selection. His name and face refresh the country's memory on this issue but, honestly, Damfacrats can't wait for this Bush-lite muppet's departure.
John Edwards does not yet realize that he cannot win and that the party is too smart to put forward a trial lawyer as the candidate. Too easily vilified. Still, he is the best-looking candidate and the party can never have too many spokespersons with thick Southern accents. He will drop out a month after Al Sharpton and Wes Clark beat him in South Carolina.
Bob Graham has currency in his home state of Florida, which, as noted, is a key state. He has the status of an elder statesman and he is holding on to the hope of getting the VP nomination. It's too bad his image and style does nothing for the masses because his message is usually excellent. He will be the first to step aside.
Howard Dean, John Kerry and Dick Gephart still have a legitimate shot at the nomination but, in regard to next November, I don't see a purpose for John Kerry anymore. He is a cheap and plastic snobby-sounding New England "long-face" and he needs to wake up to reality: his beloved and phony war-horse trump card has been torched by the real thing, the favorite,

The CIA has announced that David Kay of the Pentagon's Iraq Survey Group will report that nothing has been found. In light of this, Damfacrats are relieved to report that their prediction, that the Group would plant evidence, did not come true.
CIA spokesman Bill Harlow summoned the persistant refrain on this issue: "We expect it will reach no firm conclusions, nor will it rule anything in or out."

The report will indicate that the Group found 'not even a "minute" amount of chemical, biological or nuclear materials, nor any delivery systems nor laboratories for developing such weapons" and that the weapons are not hidden in Syria.

RAVEN: NETWORKS RUN ADS AND PROMOS OVER 25% OF PRIMETIME
Regarding Damfacratic inquiry as to how much time is wasted in an average hour of Fox television, my answer is this:
(From 2002 figures - per hour of programming)
CBS showed the biggest increase in non-programming time in primetime, rising 26 seconds to 16:04. NBC, despite a decrease of 43 seconds, remained the most cluttered network in primetime, while ABC is the least cluttered. All of the Big Four - including Fox -- are within one minute of each other for non-program minutes in primetime.

Non-programming time includes network and local commercial time, public service announcements, public service promotions, on-air promotions by the networks, and program credits not run over continuing program action.

Now that Petrolican leaders such as Bob Bennet of Utah are accusing the media of lying and claiming that things are going great over in Iraq, it is appropriate to set forth the true test of whether there is any kind of stability or meaningful success: are Insurance companies willing to insure businesses and other undertakings in and around Baghdad?
Charles Berry,
chairman of the BPL Global insurance company, says this: ”I don't think there is a pile of direct investment for Iraq waiting for the right insurance cover to turn up. When the situation settles down, investment will go in, and then it will be easier to finance if the right kind of insurance is available.”
When Nationwide and Allstate feel comfortable underwriting this disaster, Damfacrats will be willing to entertain the concept that things are at least starting at zero.
By the way, at what point did Mara Liason of NPR decide to sell out to Fox News? The Damfacratic theory is that Fox and the administration have dirt on each of these puppets' personal lives, which they will not expose so long as the puppets stay on the strings.

Sucking blood from the Earth
I'm a vampire, baby
Sell you twenty barrels worth
I'm a black bat, baby
Bangin on your window pane

I need my high octane
Good times are comin'

CLARK HAS THE RIGHT MONEY PLAN
Damfa
The General was in New York City today, giving a speech about his plan to help the economy. He discussed a shift of 100 billion dollars, from the hands of the wealthy tax-cut recipients, into several areas in need of a boost.
Nearly half the money would go toward improving homeland security, including hospital readiness and better port security, while another 40 billion would go to aid local and state governments. Clark would reserve 20 billion dollars to provide incentives to new businesses that create jobs.
Look for Clinton's remark at the Iowa Steak Fry to be the next #1 hit song: the future of jobs and growth in America is the pursuit of renewable energy.

BUSH UPDATE
Damfa
In considering the legality, or lack thereof, of constantly posting links and excerpts, Damfacrats are returning to their own reporters to get the story out. (So here's what we learned from other reporters).
New York Governor Pataki and NYS Rep Committee Chair Sandy Treadwell are claiming that Bush will win New York next year. Perhaps the Ravenites would like to bet on this proposition as well, although Damfacrats recommend putting your money on a certain General we may have mentioned. 23% of NY Republicans plan to vote against Bush.
Bush went to the UN, hat in hand, uh, well, with something in his hand, and he asked for...what, exactly? Oh yeah, he feels that the UN can play a vital role in drafting a constitution and being hall monitors during the quasi-possible Iraqi elections. Anything else? Nope. Too bad the Pubs wouldn't let the UN monitor the November 2002 U.S. elections.
Bush gave an interview with Brit Hume on Sunday, which was broadcast on Monday evening. What a pity party. Poor ole' "little ole me," he said, sniffling about how people said mean things about his Dad and about his torn "little meniscus." He said he likes to "put a little float(ie) on and run" in the pool.
His discussion of the olive/arrow variations regarding the Oval Office rug was lifted straight from the West Wing.
Amazingly, Hume cut away from one of the segments with the comment, "We'll talk about the economy next but, as you'll see, everything goes back to the War on Terror." Could it be that Fox is finally following the advice given by Damfacrats in the early summer, that is, to turn on the President and ride the wave of disgust?
The interview was also characterized by massive advertising. Damfacrats have commissioned a study to analyze the percentage of ads, silence, mumbling, hemming and hawing respectively, in comparison to the amount of time Bush was actually speaking about something. (Update update: uggabugga has the sweet breakdown).
Damfaudio supplement on the interview is available by request.

CLARK AS SEER
(From The Guardian)
The administration has never been able to make the case effectively,'' he argued in February, shortly before the war began. ``The American public doesn't understand the urgency of this, and there's not broad support.''
He asked Americans then not to blame the soldiers because they were only following orders into battle. ``And my concern is that this is a political issue; the president and his party put this forward,'' he said bitingly.
Clark also was cautious about plunging into battle after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, when many Americans were out for vengeance.
Three days after the attacks, he counseled this response: ``It's fundamentally a police effort against individuals. It's not a military effort directed against factories and airfields. You may still need to use military force, but you have to use it in a very precise way.''
***
On Iraq, before any shots were fired, Clark sketched out the dangers that would follow the fall of Saddam Hussein.
``I think there will be a lot of tensions inside Iraq, and I think that we will be welcomed very warmly at the outset but afterward, as these tensions begin to assert themselves, it'll be convenient for many different groups to look on us as the source of their problems rather than the solution,'' he said in February. ``And I think our troops will be at some risk there.''

CLARK 49%, BUSH 46%: ONE-MONTH DAMFACRATIC PREDICTION HAPPENS IN ONE WEEK
"In head-to-head matchups, registered voters said if the election were held today, almost half, 49 percent, would support Clark, while 46 percent would support Bush, which is within the poll's margin of error."
WASHINGTON – One week after he announced he was running for the Democrat nomination for president, retired Gen. Wesley Clark has surged to the head of the pack.
A USA Today/CNN/Gallup Poll found Clark leading the field with 22 percent of Democrats who are registered to vote, followed by Dean at 13 percent, Sen. John Kerry and Rep. Dick Gephardt at 11 percent each, Sen. Joe Lieberman at 10 percent and other Democrats at 4 percent or less.

Richard Reeves JOINS DAMFA-DOUBTS ABOUT CHENEY on TICKET; RUSSERT IS WEAKLIN
"Perhaps there is just no television set at Cheney's place. Unfortunately for the vice president, however, there was a video player at NBC, and Russert used it to play back Cheney's assertion, during a similar interview last March, that Saddam Hussein had reconstituted nuclear weapons.
"You misspoke," said Russert, putting it politely.
"Yeah," Cheney said quite coolly. "I did misspeak. ... We never had any evidence that he had acquired a nuclear weapon."
Russert also showed a clip from the same March show, in which he asked whether the United States was prepared for the resistance that usually meets conquerors, and Cheney answered: "The read we get on the people of Iraq is there's no question they want to get rid of Saddam Hussein and they will welcome us as liberators."
But, Russert said last Sunday, "We have not been greeted as liberators." "
Cheney's comment: "Well, I think we have by most Iraqis."
Bygones. The misspeaking served its purpose, scaring Americans and getting us into a war of White House choice. Now, said Cheney last week, "There has been significant success in putting Iraq back together again. ... Most of Iraq is stable and quiet."
That is his story and he's sticking to it. In fact, Cheney has served his purpose, and there is reason to believe that his stubborn service to president and nation will end one way or another after the next election.
Although Cheney told The Dallas Morning News last May that Bush has asked him to be his running mate again in 2004, that may not happen."

BIDEN-BACKED CLARK RAISES 750K IN 3 DAYS, STEALS LIMELIGHT FROM EDWARDS
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Retired Gen. Wesley Clark raised $750,000 in the first three days of his Democratic presidential campaign, campaign officials said Sunday.
Advisers say the money does not include the $1.9 million that supporters pledged before he entered the race Wednesday. The campaign intends to notify those supporters, members of various Draft-Clark organizations, and ask them to back up their pledges with cash.
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Sen. Joseph Biden, a former Democratic presidential candidate, says he's leaning this year toward supporting his Senate colleague John Kerry or the newcomer, retired Gen. Wesley Clark.
But, Biden was asked, what if Mrs. Clinton should decide after all to run in 2004?
``Look, this is one of the few people in all of America who's known by every single American,'' Biden said. ``The good news is the bad news: Everybody has an opinion.''
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Sen. John Edwards dismissed a national poll released over the weekend that showed the newcomer, retired Gen. Wesley Clark, among the leaders in the 10-candidate Democratic presidential campaign.
Asked if Clark had become the man to beat, Edwards replied, ``Anybody can be beaten.''
``This thing's just starting,'' he said. ``Voters are just beginning to pay attention.''
Edwards formally announced his candidacy Wednesday. Just before he took the stage in his hometown, word leaked out that Clark planned to enter the race a couple of hours later, which stole the media spotlight from Edwards and the headlines of Thursday morning's newspapers.
``Gen. Clark's not very well known across America, but he had a couple of days of being on television,'' Edwards said Sunday.

CLARK 43%, BUSH 47% -DAMFACRATS PREDICT REVERSAL OF THESE NUMBERS IN LESS THAN ONE MONTH
The current leader of the Democratic presidential challengers is retired US Army general Wesley Clark -- who announced his candidacy on Wednesday and collected 14 per cent of the vote among registered Democrats in the poll.***
In a test election against Bush, the Newsweek poll found that 43 per cent of registered voters would vote for Clark or lean toward Clark, compared with 47 per cent who said they would vote for Bush or lean toward the president.
Despite this, a sizeable chunk of all those polled, 45 per cent, said they had never heard of the retired general before.
The poll canvassed 1,001 adults between September 18 and 19 and had a three-percentage-point margin of error.

CLARK LEADS INSTANTLY
("Among the leaders" is a strange way to characterize 1st place)
WASHINGTON -- Retired Gen. Wesley Clark already appears to be very competitive in a new national poll released Saturday just days after he became the 10th Democratic presidential candidate.
Clark was among the leaders of the Democratic candidates in the Newsweek Poll and was not far behind President Bush in a head-to-head matchup in the poll taken only days after entering the race.
Clark, with 14 percent, was grouped among the leaders, along with former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean and Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut, both at 12 percent, and Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry at 10 percent.
Other candidates were in single digits.
